Vertical Access was retained by William Taylor Architects to perform a close visual and hands-on investigation of the four exterior facades of the 24-story tower and the two-story wing that abuts the south side of the tower. The purpose of the investigation was to help the design team prepare repair recommendations.
Building description
Toomey Abbott Tower was designed by Sargent Webster Crenshaw & Folley and built in 1968 for the Syracuse Housing Authority (SHA).
The building is 24 stories tall, with a three- story base and 21 floors of living units. Part of the SHA complex includes a two-story wing that connects to the south side of the tower.
The tower is constructed of poured-in place concrete framing with pre-cast concrete spandrel panels. Vertical board formwork used in the construction gives the poured-in place concrete columns a textured pattern that is also used at the pre-cast concrete spandrel panels. Rows of aluminum windows fill the openings between the columns and spandrel panels.
Scope of work
- Performed a close visual and hands-on survey of the exterior facades.
- Documented representative and notable conditions observed on the exterior using still photographs hyperlinked to annotated AutoCAD drawings, with quantities provided for each condition, (TPAS®).
